Urban Design I '14
Project Info.:
This Project Is A Macro Scale Urban Research In Wust El-Balad Area. It Consists Of A General Data Gathering Of Kevin Lynch’s ‘The Elements Of The City’, General Land Uses And A Maquette Showing Building Heights And The Previously Collected Data
The Project Involves 8 Pieces Of Land And Is An Overview Of Some Of The
Land Which Are To Be Studied By Other Groups
Our Region Is Surrounded With Many Important Main Roads Which Connect
Downtown Region With Each Other And Connect Downtown With Other Regions Like 26th Of July Corridor Which Connect Downtown With 6th October City
There Are Some Secondary Roads Connect The Main Roads They Are Between Roads They Are Not As Essential As Main Roads In Eltawfiqya Region .
There Are Some Streets For Pedestrian Purpose Only In Cafeszone
The Governmental Buildings Affect The Urban Tissue Greatly Due To Huge Scale
In The Micro Scale The Urban Tissue Has A Linear Form But In The Macro Scale The Urban Tissue Has A Radial Form , Almost All Streets Leads To A Large Square
Almost All The Large Buildings Have A Court In The Middle Of The Building For Ventilation And Light
There Are Small Paths Between Buildings To Make Movement Easy In Downtown And Everybody Can Reach Any Part In The Building Easily.
Almost All The Land Uses Are Mixed Uses , They Are Commercial In The Ground Floor And Residential In The Upper Floors . There Are Some Explicitly Commercial , Residential And Entertainment Lands
Some Lands Are For Administrative Purpose Like Court , Embassy And Syndicate , They Are Collected At The Southwest Of The Region
Other Uses For Lands Like Private Garages And Public Garages , They Are Separated From Each Other In Different Regions
This Is A Map Of Kevin Lynch’s The ‘Elements Of The City’ Which Are Composed Of 5 Elements: Edges, Nodes, Landmarks, Paths, and Districts
This Is A Combined Map That Shows 4 Of The Elements, Excluding The Districts Due To Crowdedness And Clarity Of Map
The Elements Are Generally Deductions Of The Group Rather Than Specific Sets Of Rules About The Lands
Each District From The Ones Shown Had A Special Characteristic. One Of Them Was The Tawfiqeya Souq, Which Is A Market For Selling Cars’ Spare Parts
The Second District Is For Pedestrians Only; No Cars Are Allowed To Pass Through
The Third District Has A Different Style From The Other Districts, It’s Art D'eco
Finally, The Two Districts In The Southwestern Region Are Very Important Districts (The Courts & Banks District).
Paths Are Ranging Between Regular Streets And Roads, And In Other Areas They Were Just Small Paths Between Buildings That Lead To Open Spaces Shared Between Them
The Nodes That Were Very Important Were:
-Orabi Sq.
-Souq El-Tawfikeya
-The Intersection Infront Of Americaine
-The Intersection OF 26th Of July And Ramsis St.
We Acknowledge The Existence Of An Architecture Inhabits An Edge Condition, Which We Define As A Boundary, A Border Contained Within A system Of Multivalent Relationships.
-Ramses St.: Which Is A Very Crowded Street; Pedestrians Often Find It Hard To Cross This Street
-Garage's Fence: The Fence Is a General Barrier From Reaching The Othe Side, One Has To Cross Theough The Garage
Landmarks Are Buildings Which Are Clearly Know Amongst General Inhabitants Of The Area. They May Be Known For Their Architecture, Building/Landuse, History, Importance, .... Etc
-Courts
-Americaine Building
-Cinema Cosmos
This Map Shows The Relation Between Privacy And Ownership And How That Might Affect The Social Interaction Between The People
-Public Areas Were Mainly The Streets And Pedestrian Paths
-There Is Also A Public Area With Another Concept Such As Public Markets
-Private Areas Were Residential Buildings
-Governmental Buildings Are Considered As Semi-Private
-The Inner Building Paths Are Considered As Semi-Private
